Ral had an adenoidectomy today. I've been telling him for a few weeks about it. His version of what was going to happen was, "I'm going to have surgery. They will give me medicine. The doc will fix my nose. When I wake up I'm going to be grumpy. Then I'll get to have ice cream."
The actual events were a little close to his tale.
He was fine during pre-op. After the verced he got kind of loopy and drowsy. We walked him to the OR doors and kissed him goodbye. It wasn't until after he was through the doors that he looked back crying.
The doc said his adenoids were very swollen. They also did allergy testing. He is allergic to several trees and grasses. Also dust.
When they brought him back from surgery the nightmare began.
Poor kid cried for so long. I didn't realize coming off of the anesthesia would be so hard for him. He was thirsty and his throat hurt so he drank about 5 cups of water. He just cried and cried. I got in the bed and held him for quite a while. Soon he went to daddy in the chair and then to me in the chair. They had an oxygen level indicator on his toe which he ripped off quickly. His biggest complaint after that was the IV, which of course was the last thing they took out. When he looked at the bloody bandage after they took it out he cried and cried b/c the bandage was "sucking his bleed" out.
The other time he got upset was when he saw the writing on his legs from the allergy testing. I told him they just needed to write some stuff on his legs. He looks at me and cries, "They think Im a piece of paper!"
Poor guy.
When we got ready to leave after at least an hour and half after surgery, Ral was back to being Ral.
We watched Toy Story on the way home. He had an ice cream and a happy meal from McDonald's.
He tried to take a nap but his nose is SO very stuffy, it just didn't work.
He's been complaining of his throat hurting some more, so he's already had more ibuprofen and his dose of steroid.
Raleigh is tough though. I think tomorrow he will be much better.
